: ‭Exploring meaning and constructs of sexual health education for female adolescents: developing a model using exploratory mixed methods research ‬. Background: Despite clear reasons for necessity of sexual health education for adolescents, it is a contested issue and has faced challenges in most cultures. Adolescents specially females in Iran have so many unmet needs in sexual health issues, yet appropriateness of sexual health education to them is controversy. Acceptability, characteristics and challenges of sexual health education for female adolescents have not been studied enough. This mixed methods study aimed to explore meanings and constructs of sexual health education for female adolescents in Iran and to develop an appropriate educational pattern for this purpose.Methods: This study was a sequential exploratory mixed methods research. The qualitative phase was a qualitative content analysis in which data were collected through individual in-depth semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions with 84 participants including female adolescents(14-18y), mothers, authorities in health and education organizations, health care providers, school teachers and counselors and clergies, who were purposefully selected in 2010 in Mashhad and Ahvaz. Data were analyzed using conventional qualitative content analysis upon which a questionnaire was developed to measure the adolescents' attitudes regarding sexual health education issues. After measuring the construct validity and reliability of the instrument, it was utilized in a Survey in 2011 on 359 adolescent girls in Mashhad and Ahvaz Schools who were selected through cluster sampling. With merging two sets of qualitative and quantitative findings a sexual health educational model was eventually developed.Results: Qualitative findings revealed healthy cross-gender relationship as core of female adolescents' sexual health. The mission of adolescents' sex education has two main elements including clarifying "relationship norms" and "empowering adolescents to reduce their vulnerability". Additionally, sexual health education should be a shared responsibility of family and schools tailored to adolescents' needs, value-laden, and according to the developmental stages and in line with overcoming challenges ahead, which cultural modifications and advocacy are the most important facilitators to address those challenges. In the quantitative phase the majority of the adolescent girls were agree to the necessity of sexual education, School-based sexual education, low quality of current sexual education, reluctance of reticence and censoring in sexual education, the important Supportive role of adults, the gradual nature of sexual education inaccordance with developmental stages, and also providing an inclusive sexual health educational program for adolescents. Merging two sets of qualitative and quantitative findings resulted in developing a "Supportive- Educational Planning Model" for sexual health.Condusion: Findings revealed that the main Socio-cultural challenges to sexual health education for adolescents in Iran areaffected by taboos Surrounding sexuality, which largely influence the nature and content of sexual health education as well. Unawareness about the content of sex education and the mission of thesex education programs lead decision-makeIS, parents or clergies to oppose. However, the emerging challenges should draw the attention of authorities to design and implement domestic and culturally sensitive programs. Indeed, it is the time to take steps towards overcoming the cultural taboos and barriers by advocacy and developing and implementing programs with comprehensive contents, instead of being entrapped in the circle of suspicion and distrust.
