خلاصه يا چکيده : ‭Background: Depressor septi nasi muscle (DSN) is an important muscle in the nose dynamics. Its hyperactivity causes the smile deformity that includes nasal tip depression. Nasal tip of the people with hyperactive DSN depresses repeatedly during speaking and smiling. This may result in nasal lengthening during the years. Methods: Pairs of cases, consisted of a child and one of its parents, were studied in two groups: the case group with DSN hyperactivity and the control group with DSN inactivity in both child and parent. Nasal length from nasion to tip and facial length from nasion to menton is measured in the repose and smile. Results: Eighty pairs of child and parent were studied. In both groups, there was a significant linear correlation between the nasal length of the parent and the child. In both groups (case and control), there was a significant difference between nasal length of the child and the parent. The increase of the nasal length of parents compared to the children was more in the control group. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that nasal length increases with age and that DSN hyperactivity is not an effective factor on it. This unpredictable result may affect the presumption that cases with DSN hyperactivity will have longer noses in the future. Long term prospective studies on cohort groups are required to clarify the variables affecting nasal lengthening with aging and interventional studies are needed to examine the effects of DSN resection on this phenomenon. Keywords: Depressor septi nasi muscle (DSN), DSN hyperactivity, nasal length, facial length.‬
